Google Shuts Down Softcard (Mar. 5, 2015)
Google wasted no time shutting down Softcard after acquiring technology and intellectual property from the telco-backed mobile wallet last week. A notice on Softcard’s Website confirms that, as of March 31, the Softcard app no longer will work. The site recommends users download the Google Wallet app and says that user information will not be shared with Google as part of the acquisition. As previously reported, Google is working with AT&T, T-Mobile USA and Verizon to ensure Google Wallet will come pre-installed in new Android phones beginning later this year, providing an important growth ramp for the 4-year-old NFC mobile payments concept.
