Google Launches Prepaid Vouchers in India for Google Play Customers (June 16, 2015)
Google Inc. today announced the rollout of Google-branded prepaid vouchers in India to enable Indian consumers who lack credit cards to purchase digital content on Google Play. The Google Play prepaid vouchers are sold in denominations of INR 500, 1,000 and 1,500 (US$ $7.78, $15.57 and $23.35) at select electronics retail chains, including Vijay Sales in New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Jaipur, Saurabh Agarwal, head of retail partnerships for Google Play Gift Cards in India, wrote in a blog post. Customers may buy the vouchers in cash or any form of payment the store accepts to obtain a redemption code to buy digital content including e-books, apps and games (and pay for movie rental).
In India, where credit card penetration is low, many consumers have relied on virtual credit cards issued by banks and gift card codes sold online to make Google Play purchases. In more than two dozen nations Google offers direct carrier billing for Google Play purchases, but that option is not yet available in India.
