SUBWAY Adding PayPal OneTouch (July 30, 2015)
SUBWAY will launch a revamped version of its mobile app and Web ordering service, adding PayPal’s OneTouch mobile checkout as a payment option. Quietly launched by the QSR giant last year, the app enables users to place orders and pay ahead of time via linked payment card, Apple Pay or Android Pay. Beginning later this year, PayPal OneTouch will be added as a payment option. Paydiant, the white-label mobile wallet specialist that built SUBWAY’s app, was acquired by PayPal earlier this year and now is working to integrate OneTouch into the app and Web ordering service. OneTouch enables users to make payments without entering any payment data, user IDs or passwords—all of which are securely stored and accessed with a single click or touch.
SUBWAY—the world’ largest restaurant chain, with more than 44,000 locations worldwide—has been on the leading edge of mobile payments adoption. The company was among the first major brands to add support for Apple Pay and Softcard when those services debuted last fall. SUBWAY’s history of loyalty and payments innovation dates back to the 1980s, when it launched its first loyalty program. The company piloted a Web-based order-ahead feature more than a decade ago and released a reloadable closed-loop prepaid card in 2006.
