Samsung Promises More Web-Connected Devices in Push toward Internet of Things (Jan. 7, 2016)
Samsung, one of the world’s largest electronics companies, this week gave its latest boost to the so-called Internet of Things (IoT) by showing off Web-connected TVs and other products. The news originated at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where, in a keynote speech today, WP Hong, Samsung SDS president and head of the company’s solution business, pointed to Samsung’s line of SUHD T
Vs and Family Hub refrigerators as examples of Web-connected devices that consumers can use to enable purchases and other tasks. His speech came amid an announcement from MasterCard at the show that the payment network would enable payments from that new line of Samsung refrigerators.
He also announced the launch of the Samsung Smart Home Cloud API, or application program interface, “which makes it possible to integrate any IoT-ready Samsung household appliance into any IoT ecosystem,” Samsung says in a summary of the speech.
At last year’s show, Samsung president and CEO BK Yoon said that by 2017, all Samsung TVs will be part of the Internet of Things. Though he did not detail what services that might lead to, technology and payments firms already are working to enable consumers to buy via their remotes or keyboards products featured on TV shows. Yoon added that within five years, all Samsung hardware will connect to the Internet, “further accelerating the expansion of IoT devices available in the market,” according to Samsung.
