Januar lands European payment licence from Danish regulator
Januar, a financial infrastructure provider for crypto businesses, has secured a full Payment Institution licence from the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority (DFSA).
Founded in 2021 and based in Copenhagen, Denmark, Januar was, until now, operating as a payment institution with limited permission in the Danish market. Receiving a full licence will now allow it to onboard clients from across the European Economic Area (EEA).
The company equips crypto businesses with IBAN infrastructure, allowing them to carry out payments and operational transactions through a compliant EU-based IBAN business account.
“Compliant crypto businesses are often rejected or offboarded by the traditional financial sector, simply because of their sector of activity,” remarks Marcus Mølleskov, CRCO of Januar.
Mølleskov says this can happen to virtual asset service providers (VASPs) as well who have completed their duties to register with financial authorities and have all the policies, procedures and processes in place to comply with AML laws.
“We provide our customers with access to the critical financial services they need to operate, so they don’t have to worry about being de-banked, even if they can get an account in the first place,” he adds.
In April last year, Januar secured a €6 million seed round led by Element Ventures, with participation from Angular Ventures, Outward VC, and early pre-seed investors byFounders.
