Top ten retail banking sites in the US – July 2016
Who is leading the digital way among the US retail banks?
We have put together some nifty stats for the top ten online banking sites in the US for the past month (data courtesy of SimilarWeb). We’ll be publishing regular updates on a monthly basis, to track the changes, developments and trends – to bring you a fuller picture of the country’s digital banking appetite.
Highlights:
- In July, Chase led the US retail banking industry for the highest desktop visits – more than 130 million visits. The site is not just the US leader in retail banking but is the world’s second most visited bank or payment site – only behind payments service, PayPal.
- In terms of winning online traffic, Chase is joined in the top tier by Bank of America (105.2 million desktop visits) and Wells Fargo (96.4 million). In a more distant fourth place, was the next batch of most visited retail bank brands, led by Capital One (over 50 million desktop visits in July).
- However, demonstrating the most visited are not necessarily the most engaging – fifth-placed Citi.com saw the highest average time on site for a session (seven minutes 38 seconds). This was a massive three minutes and 28 seconds higher than lowest ranked, PNC, on four minutes 10 seconds.
- Chase also saw the most pages visited in an average session by its customers – at nearly 11 pages per session. This compared to just 4.20 in an average session for the lowest ranking in our top ten, citibankonline.com. This suggests that Chase is successfully navigating customer online experience. Indeed, the site’s homepage carries prominently and highly visually a list of products for customers, from “saving money” to “buying a credit card” and “buying a car”.
- Regions, which offers a full spectrum of banking services, had the most impressive figures for bounce rate – the lowest percentage of visitors to a particular website who navigate away from the site after viewing only one page, at only 6.09%. In fact, despite having the lowest traffic in our top ten, Regions.com is a highly effective performer on all engagement metrics and may have much to show other financial institutions on a successful online strategy.
